Local Grassroots Nonprofits Receive Summer Programming Grants

The Trefler Foundation has awarded 6 grants to small, local, grassroots organizations in and around Boston. These organizations provide important services and programming that extends deep into their communities to reach historically underserved youth and families.

These awards represent the Trefler Foundation’s commitment to ensuring that Boston’s youth and families have access to high-quality summer programming that provides physical and emotional support outlets.

Beneficiaries of these awards include:

Empower Our Crown Foundation, Inc. for their Empower Our Youth: Leaders of the Future program. This six-week virtual leadership development training program provides youth and young adults the necessary tools, resources, and support to identify their life goals through a series of clinical introspection sessions and understanding of self and secure leadership positions of their choice. 

He Is Me Institute, Inc. for their Summer Book Club in which participating boys of color are provided a summer reading book that builds on their identity and social-emotional development by engaging in a book club led by males of color.

Open Run, Inc.- Inner City Sports: Nxt Era Panthers, a year-round, Boston-based, traveling competitive youth flag football team. This program aims to inspire and educate inner-city youth through sports, mentorship, and financial literacy by increasing access to resources with a focus on community and development. In addition to athletics, the youth athletes participate in the Nxt Era book club and life skills workshops.

P I M Project, Inc. (Prevention-Intervention-Mediation) for the Summer in the City 2021 program, a non-competitive, noncontact sports initiative for inner-city youth that will focus on providing a high-quality physical fitness program with a health and wellness component, as well as integrating the organization’s fundamental mission of providing positive self-development strategies to youth, adolescents, and young men of color.

The American City Coalition, Inc. (TACC) Savor the Square, an annual, multi-weekend long event that brings together existing brick and mortar businesses and entrepreneurial vendors into one marketplace located at the core of Roxbury’s business district, Nubian Square. The event aims to jumpstart the civic and business revitalization of the Square and create buzz about its unique offerings by increasing connections between residents and visitors with local businesses.

Youth In Crisis, Inc. for the 20th Annual Food for Thought Scoops & Hoops Family Day, an annual event that takes place at Harambee Park in Mattapan. This event promotes non-violence, community building, and unity through sports, games, fellowship, and good food. Participants enjoy free food, ice cream, train rides, pony rides, bouncy houses, and fire engine tours, all of which are a part of the event’s community outreach and engagement focus.
