Improving preparation for students who wish to teach in urban settings.

As a component of its partnership with Dorchester High School, the Foundation supported the development of a new model of teacher training that brought student teachers into classrooms in urban high schools for a full year of training with master teachers and university faculty.

The Foundation’s positive experience led to a series of research projects undertaken by the Rennie Center for Education Policy. These papers examined opportunities to strengthen practice-based teacher training and, likewise, offered program and policy strategies.

Noting that Massachusetts was exploring improvements in teacher preparation, the Foundation then joined a collaboration of state-based funders to work with the National Council on Teacher Quality to advance its national work on improving schools of education through rigorous program evaluation.
